San Marino homes are among the most expensive in the U.S. with a median sale price of $1.55 million. The typical 1920's to 1950's housing styles are uncharacteristic of a typical California city. There are no condos or apartments and the development of "McMansions" has also been discouraged due to strict zoning and building laws. Homes here tend to be larger, older and situated on bigger than average lots with mature trees. The city is comprised of a number of districts and residential neighborhoods that all have their own characteristics.
The schools in San Marino are among the highest rated in California. The public schools are designated as a California Distinguished School, and National Blue Ribbon School. The local high school consistently achieves the highest API score among other public high schools in the state.
Located strategically in the center of San Marino is Lacy Park. This 30-acre green space provides a source of recreation and gathering for the community. In addition to holding numerous concerts and public events, the park has walking trails and tennis courts.
San Marino is also home to Huntington Library, the former estate of Henry Huntington. Today this world renowned cultural treasure serves as a home for one of the largest research libraries in the U.S., 120 acres of Botanical Gardens featuring over 15,000 kinds of plants; and the Huntington Art Collection featuring British, American and Continental masterpieces from the 18th and 19th centuries.
The gallery is also the permanent home for the famous Blue Boy by Gainsborough and Pinkie by Lawrence. The library contains a large collection of rare books including a copy of the Gutenberg Bible, Benjamin Franklin's autobiography, drafts of Henry David Thoreau's Walden, and Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, among many others. People come from all over the globe to study the manuscripts housed at the Huntington Library.
