Pasadena has a very strong sense of community. People are proud to live here, and are quick to say they live in Pasadena. The community was originally settled by wealthy Easterners and Mid-Westerners, and it's not unusual for people from those states to feel a connection with Pasadena; as a result, often end up settling here because it feels like home to them.
Among the many distinctive neighborhoods in Pasadena include the affluent South Orange Grove Boulevard. Also called "Millionaire's Row," this mansion laden street is known for its famous residents including Adolphus Busch (co-founder of Anheuser-Busch), William Wrigley Jr. (chewing gum magnate), and David and Mary Gamble, son of James Gamble of Procter & Gamble. Many of the older estates have since been replaced with exclusive, meticulously landscaped condominiums.
The city is well known as the home of the annual Tournament of Roses Parade and ensuing Rose Bowl college football game. The active cultural scene here includes museums for every taste, including the Norton Simon to the Pacific Asia. Also popular are the many live theater venues, Pasadena Symphony and the Pasadena Pops at Descanso Gardens. This is also a popular city for filming locations.
Pasadena has an active historical society that strives to protect architecturally and historically significant properties. The city is known for its examples of famous architectural styles, architects and old family names.
Pasadena is served by the Pasadena Unified School District and is home to the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and the California School of Culinary Arts. The Art Centre College of Design, known for its automotive design program, has two local campuses and was recently re-designed by Frank Gehry.
